Erica tore the paper wrapping from a bolt of bronze satin, gave it a halfhearted glance and shoved it aside. She must have had something in mind when she ordered it, but she hadn’t a clue what it was at the moment. She slipped her shoes off and moved to the window of the tiny office and watched Jason work his magic with a customer. Thankfully, he’d refrained from dragging her into conversation with the woman. She would not even be at the shop except that a shipment had arrived and only she could check that it was exactly what she’d ordered.

Jason ushered the customer to the door and walked straight back to the office. “Okay, tell Daddy all about it, sugar. That’s the third customer you’ve snubbed today. I’m running out of excuses trying to do damage control here.” With his hands on his hips, his gaze was so intent that she knew he was in one of his get-to-the-bottom-of-the-problem moods. “What’s going on?”

“I haven’t snubbed anyone, Jason. I just don’t gush over customers the way you do.”

“That customer bought two very expensive quilts, honeybunch. It’s time to gush when I make a forty-five-hundred-dollar sale. And I didn’t hear an answer.”

“I didn’t hear a question.”

Rolling his eyes, he turned about, walked through the shop to the door, flipped the Closed sign and twisted the lock. “It’s only thirty minutes short of closing time,” he said, glancing at his watch. “I’m meeting Phillip, but he’ll wait. And the question was, what’s going on? You’ve been in la-la land for the past week. I’m good at math. It was one week ago that you spent the weekend with Hunter at the ranch. I’d be a lot happier over this if you looked like a woman who’d been laid, but you don’t.”

“I wish you’d stop obsessing over my love life, Jason. And there’s nothing going on.” She flipped aimlessly through her sketch pad, wondering why she’d ordered a hideous peacock print. “I’m just at one of those low periods. If I was an author, I’d have writer’s block. I can’t seem to come up with anything worthwhile. We’ve taken a lot of orders, but I can’t seem to focus. It’s scary. I’m worried.”

“I think you’re focused, all right, but it’s on something other than the label.” He flung himself into a chair. “Admit it, Erica. You’re in love. You finally woke up and reentered the human race. And speaking of Hunter, where is he? How is it you spent a weekend with him and he hasn’t been around?” He gave her a suspicious look. “Have you pissed him off? Did you do what you’re best at when a man gets the hots for you?”

“I haven’t seen Hunter since Monday morning when he drove me back from his ranch. This time, I’m not the one who’s backing off.”

“Has he called?” he asked, frowning.

“No.”

“You’ve been dumped?” For once, she’d surprised him.

She inspected a spool of black fringe, then dropped it back in its box. “Is that so incredible?”

“Yeah, it is.
